Beach days are sacred times to recharge and reboot in an increasingly connected and fast paced society. By its very nature, the beach is disconnected from the frenetic pace of our daily lives. There’s nothing to do, the pace is slow, and there’ s a lot to enjoy.
If you want to get your really make the most out of your time at the beach, follow these essential rules:
1) Don’t rush it
There is no such thing as a good rushed beach day. Don’t try to squeeze in lots of other things on a beach day. You are going to the beach, what more do you need? Have a nice breakfast, pack your gear, and don’t plan to leave till late afternoon. That’s the only way to reap the true relaxation benefits of a beach day.
2) Leave the tech at home
Similar to rule number one, don’t plan to be on your phone or laptop all day, Leave the tech at home, or at least in your backpack. One of the best aspects of a good beach day is leaving it all at home.
There are very few places that we can truly get away from technology, and we need breaks. Even though you can technically have your phone at the beach, try not to be on it the whole time, or better yet, just turn it off and let yourself truly relax.
Also, don’t let yourself get caught up in taking selfies to post online or taking a phone of every moment. If you are trying to take the perfect selfie for social media, you aren’t really living in the moment, relaxing. Let it go for another day. Use your beach time to truly reconnect with yourself and let the rest go for a bit, it will all be there at the end of the day.
3) Bring good gear.
You won’t last long or be happy if you don’t bring some snacks, something to provide shade, etc. Bring proper clothes, food, shade structures, towels, plenty of water, etc. If you have good gear you can enjoy a long lazy day in comfort, and that’s what it’s all about, right?
4) Pay attention to sun protection
A great beach day is quickly ruined with a bad burn. You want to go home feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, not fried to a crisp. The worst beach day souvenir is a burn that tortures you days later.
Lather on that sunscreen (don’t be chincy with sunscreen!) Wear your hat and a good rash guard. Reapply your sunscreen. Do the same for your kids if you have them. Sunburned people are not happy people. Don’t be a sunburned person.
5) Relaxing is ultimately a choice.
Check your worries at the door (or at the sand). You can be in paradise, but if you allow your worries to come with you, it’s not paradise anymore, is it? Just the same, you can go to your local beach or lake and really let yourself relax and come back home just as rejuvenated as if you went to an exotic paradise. Relaxation is really a mindset. Follow the tips above and you are well on your way to a great beach day, no matter your location.
Any time you take a day to relax out in nature, away from the hustle and bustle, and away from the 24/7 pull of technical devices, you are making a healthy choice to take a much needed time out and you will reap the rewards in a multitude of ways. I know people who live right near the beach who never seem to get there to enjoy it. Their weekends are full of rushing around. Taking the time to relax really is a choice. Make it. Defend your relaxation time fiercely. Make a serious commitment to spending some unhurried time doing something you love with the people you love—you will never regret it.
